Have you ever wondered about the origins of your yoga practice or heard reference to yoga being a 3000, 4000 or even 5000 year old tradition? Yoga has a very rich history, frequently intertwined with culture, religion, mythology, geography and politics and yet has retained its identity in fresh and modern varieties to meet every individual “where they are” in their personal journey. This workshop is designed to give an overview of the chronology of primary literature, provide references for further study, and provide an introductory discussion of what it means to “do yoga” in the context of history. We will also trace the lineage of the primary limbs of yoga as they have currently evolved. This workshop is directed towards all yoga practitioners with an interest expanding their foundational understanding of the heritage that we all share. We will spend part of our time exploring asanas and pranayama so please wear comfortable clothes and bring your mat if you have one.
